For most of us, at the age of 17 or 18 we are faced with the decision of what do we want to do for the rest of our lives. This is an overwhelming, and daunting task to ask anyone, let alone a kid who’s still going through life changes, physically, mentally, and socially. What many of us fail to see is that this decision can and should be revisited multiple times throughout our lives. Why not? At 35, are you the same person you were at 17? What about 48? Oftentimes, our career chooses us out of high school or college. We get on a path and strive to climb the ladder ahead of us, never looking at a different path. The result is spending way too much time in a career that no longer serves you. The myth is that a career always moves forward. Sometimes, we need to hit the reset button which doesn’t mean starting over, but rather continuing from where we are. Here are 5 tips for re-designing and engineering the life you want…

1. Evaluate Your Skills and Likes

Are you utilizing all of your skills in your current career? Are you even doing something you enjoy? The first step to re-discovering yourself is to evaluate your talents, skills and desires to discover a new path that might bring you more fulfillment.

2. Find Your Superpowers

All of us have superpowers, even if we don’t realize it. These are the things in life that just seem to come natural to you and not so much to others. Finding out your true superpowers can help you navigate your next path in life. If you are not sure about your superpowers, ask those that are close to you. Many times others can see these gifts in us, even when we are unaware of them.

3. Decide What’s Important To You

Next, it’s important to decide the things in a career that are important to you. Maybe it is doing something that feels meaningful. Maybe it is having time flexibility or a great work-life balance. Whatever those things are, it’s important to make a list of the top 5 most important aspects of a new career.

4. Think Outside The Box

Now that you know your skills, desires, and superpowers, it’s time to get creative, and practical. Think about how you can bring value to an industry sector, company, or group using your skills. Get creative with this exercise and try not to censor yourself. Think big and write down as many ideas as you can think of.

5. Be Sure To Include Your Important Items

Remember the list of the 5 most important things in a new career that you made? Be sure that your next path includes at least 2 of these items. Sometimes we can get distracted from our true selves by external influences like money and status. It’s important to be true to yourself and to make sure your next decision serves your higher purpose in life.
